Gynecomastia is characterized by enlarged male breasts. Although it’s a distressing and embarrassing condition for many men, a straight-forward surgical procedure can correct the excess volume while sculpting a flat and masculine chest.

What is gynecomastia? Understanding your condition

Gynecomastia occurs due to an imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. It is often the result of natural changes in hormone levels, though it can also develop due to certain medications and medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism and problems with the liver.

The symptoms of gynecomastia include swollen breast tissue and breast tenderness. In many cases, gynecomastia resolves on its own without treatment. However, if your enlarged breast tissue is persistent and severely interfering with your quality of life, a male breast reduction may be in your best interest.

Get your confidence back

A male breast reduction is designed to remove excess skin and tissue, sculpting a fit and masculine chest. When done correctly, the procedure has the power to:

  • Correct enlarged male breasts
  • Improve your quality of life and confidence levels
  • Relieve the embarrassment that is often associated with gynecomastia
  • Restore your ability to comfortably exercise, play sports, and lead an active lifestyle

Are you a candidate?

When it comes to gynecomastia, diet and exercise are rarely sufficient treatment options. As such, a male breast reduction is a necessary step for many patients. You may be considered an ideal candidate for gynecomastia surgery if:

  • Your breast development is stable
  • You are embarrassed by large or feminine breasts
  • You are a non-smoker and in good general health
  • You have realistic expectations for what the procedure can accomplish

The procedure: What to expect

Dr. Fenner performs male breast reductions utilizing a variety of surgical techniques. The most common approach is a personalized combination of surgical excision and liposuction, as it can address excess skin, swollen breast tissue and unwanted fatty deposits in the area.

Under general anesthesia, Dr. Fenner will first create discreet incisions along the edge of your areola or hidden within your chest’s natural contours. Through those openings, he can remove unwanted glandular tissue, trim away excess skin, and resize and relocate your nipple and areola. From there, he will perform precise liposuction to sculpt your chest and remove unwanted fat.

The recovery

After gynecomastia surgery, you will be free to return home the same day to begin the healing process. During the initial recovery period, swelling, pain and sensitivity is to be expected. These effects should subside fairly quickly and can be effectively managed with pain medication.

Most of our patients can return to work within about five days. However, you will need to avoid exercise and strenuous activity for five weeks and continue wearing your compression garment for six weeks to support your new chest contours.
